In the Spring of 2001 Sadan was invited to view the work of Shen Wei who had just spent
several months choreographing a new dance for a dance company at the Conservatory at Purchase College of the Arts comprised of the advanced students
that was beyond any student performance I had seen before.
Shen Wei who was relatively unknown
had recently arrived from Mainland China where he had performed with the Chinese Opera/Dance
Theatre and also Danced and choreographed with China's first modern dance company.

The performance Shen Wei created in collaboration with the students was an elegant haunting expressionistic
piece. It was a visual experience comparable to watching a dream or living painting in the colors of
the pre Raphaelites, in the poetic dream state and trance of the Butoh.
It had nothing in common with the rapid contemporary staccatto of a Tharp or a Morris.
Or like a dream, half remembered, a passion yet to flower......
